| | | | Creator: | Ameritrust Corporation | | | | Dates: | 1871-1991 | | | | Abstract: | Ameritrust Corporation began in 1894 when The Cleveland Trust Company was founded in Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland Trust then assumed the contracts of the Security Safe Deposit and Trust Company, also located in Cleveland, Ohio. Beginning in 1903, Cleveland Trust acquired or merged with several other savings banks, including The Windemere Savings and Trust Company and The Western Reserve Trust Company. Cleveland Trust promoted innovative operating policies and procedures, including the establishment of an advertising department in 1913. It increased its number of branch offices through additional mergers, including Lake Shore Banking and Trust Company and The Garfield Savings Bank. Growth continued during the 1920s with the acquisition of the Pearl Street Savings and Trust Company. Two more banks were acquired in the 1930s; Midland Bank and South Euclid Bank. A new six story office building at East 9th Street and Huron Road was constructed in 1962. An adjacent office tower was completed in 1971. In 1974, CleveTrust Corporation, a bank holding company, was formed, with Cleveland Trust as the lead bank. Cleveland Trust was one of six local banks holding short-term notes of the City of Cleveland when financial difficulties in 1978 lead to the city's default on these loans. In 1979, The Cleveland Trust Company's name was changed to AmeriTrust Corporation. In 1986, the name was changed to Ameritrust Corporation. In 1991, Ameritrust merged with Society Corporation, and in 1992, went out of existence as a corporate entity. The collection consists of articles of incorporation, bylaws, codes of regulation, annual reports, minutes, histories, newspaper and magazine clippings, financial documents, directories, handbooks, correspondence, press releases, biographical sketches, signage, marketing material, speeches, in-house publications, scrapbooks, and original advertising art work. The collection includes records of banks and other institutions merged into and acquired by The Cleveland Trust Company. Operating records of The Cleveland Trust Company are included, as are records created by the Publicity Department of Cleveland Trust and in-house publications. Also included are records documenting Cleveland Trust's leadership in the fields of branch banking, publicity, and marketing. Documents pertaining to the construction of the Ninth Street Tower and parking garage are part of these records. Materials concerned with Frederick H. | | | | Creator: | Society Corporation | | | | Dates: | 1836-1987 | | | | Abstract: | Society Corporation was Ohio's first registered bank holding company, formed in 1958 when the Society for Savings (founded in 1849 as a mutual savings bank) was merged into Society National Bank (a stock bank organized in 1956 to provide commercial banking services as a subsidiary of Society for Savings). Myron T. Herrick was president of Society for Savings from 1894-1905 and 1908-1921. A pioneer in issuing term and capital loans during the Depression, Society was also a leader in marketing and promotional methods for attracting new depositors. The unprecedented unification of Society for Savings and Society National Bank in 1958 was orchestrated by president Mervin B. France. Litigation regarding the merger was not settled until 1962. By 1989, Society Corporation had affiliates in four regions of Ohio and controlled assets of over $9 billion. Its most formidable acquisition was that of Centran Corporation in 1985, itself a regional multi-bank holding company. The collection consists of records of the Society for Savings, Society National Bank, and Society Corporation, including acts of incorporation, charters and bylaws, histories, passbooks, personal papers of past presidents (especially Samuel H. Mather), minutes of trustees' and annual meetings from 1849, annual financial reports and quarterly statements, ledger books, administrative and secretarial files, bank newsletters, news and publicity releases, and scrapbooks. Included are files on bank "runs", World War I Liberty Loan drives, 1955 legislative activity regarding the formation of Society National Bank, the merger of Society for Savings into Society National Bank and the creation of Society Corporation. The collection also contains branch acquisition files and files of affiliate acquisitions, i.e. Centran Corporation and Central National Bank of Cleveland. Of particular note are reports on attracting new depositors, public relations and advertising files, and material on the construction and renovation of Society's headquarters. She graduated from Flora Stone Mather College in 1928, then from Western Reserve University's School of Graduate Studies in 1941 after writing "More Love Brother" for her master's thesis. This musical play (included in this collection), concerning the North Union Shaker community in the 1860s, was performed at Cain Park, Cleveland Heights, Ohio, in 1945. She also studied dance with Eleanor Frampton and Martha Graham, and taught at Laurel and Cain Park schools in the Cleveland area. She was married to Sidney Andorn, but continued to use her maiden name, Miriam Cramer. The collection consists of clippings, correspondence, miscellaneous papers and publications, musical publications, research notes, scrapbook materials, speeches, and writings. Crawford headed Thompson Products, Inc. (later TRW Inc.) as it moved from an automotive and aircraft parts manufacturer into the aviation and aerospace industries. A leader of Cleveland's philanthropic community, Crawford served on the boards of many cultural institutions. He was appointed to the Western Reserve Historical Society Board of Trustees in 1944 and later served as it's president. He was instrumental in the transfer of the Thompson Auto Album and Aviation Museum collection to WRHS in the 1960s, which became the nucleus of the Frederick C. Crawford Auto-Aviation Collection of WRHS. Crawford was married twice; to Audrey Cecelia Bowles in 1932, and to Kathleen M. Saxon in 1975. | | | | Creator: | DeFreesez and Henricks Family | | | | Dates: | 1867-1876 | | | | Abstract: | Anthony DeFreesez, (1788-1873) one of twelve children, was born May 4, 1788 in Rockbridge, Virginia. He died in South Bend, Indiana. His father was Joseph Hutton DeFreesez, (ca. 1753-1826) born in New York, New York, and his mother was Mary Start (ca. 1755-ca. 1829). According to Anthony's family narrative, DeFreesez is French in origin and the family came to New York, then known as New Amsterdam, from Holland. The name may have originally been DeForest and evolved to DeFreesez due to a Dutch pronunciation. Dr. John A. Henricks (1811-ca. 1876), great-great-grandfather of the collection donor, was born August 10, 1811 in Pendleton County, Kentucky. His family soon moved to Champaign County, Ohio. He studied medicine at Urbana with lectures in Cincinnati and then began to practice medicine. He continued to practice medicine until the early 1830s when he moved to the South Bend, Indiana area. He was married to Julia Comparet ca. 1833 and they had two children who both died in infancy. Julia died around this time as well, and John relocated to Joliet, Illinois to work on the Illinois and Michigan Canal and then become the warden of the state prison in Joliet until 1842 when he returned to the South Bend area. He remarried in 1841 to Harriet Sanger (Langer?) and they had six children of which only one, Edward W. Henricks, survived. Edward W. Henricks, son of John A., was born ca. 1849. He served aboard the U.S.S. Canandaigua in the late 1860s. His log of a voyage from October 25, 1867-November 20 1868 is included in this collection. He was married around 1872 to Elizabeth (unknown maiden name) and they had three children. Born in Pennsylvania to Michael A. and Martha A. (Dodson) Dively, he attended Lock Haven State College, earned a B.S. in electrical engineering at the University of Pittsburgh in 1925, and a M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1929. During the Great Depression, he worked at North American Refractories and at Republic Steel Corporation. He joined the Harris-Seybold-Potter Company of Cleveland, Ohio, in 1937, becoming director in 1941, vice president and general manager in 1944, and president in 1947. The company became the Harris-Intertype Corporation in 1957, and later the Harris Corporation. He served as president and chairman of the board from 1954-1961, continuing as board chairman from 1961 until his retirement in 1972. In 1971, his book, The Power of Professional Management, was published. He was a co-founder of the Cleveland One Percent Plan, whose mission was to encourage corporate support for higher education. Dively endowed a professorship in electrical engineering at Case Western Reserve University, where he served as vice chairman of the University Board of Trustees. In 1956 he endowed the Geo. S. Dively Foundation to assist various charitable and educational interests. He married Harriet Seeds in 1933. In 1969, he married Juliette Gaudin. The Van Sweringen brothers established a railroad empire in the 1920s which collapsed during the Depression. Doherty wrote a history of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad entitled, Smooth is the road. | | | | Creator: | Temple Emanu El | | | | Dates: | 1937-1986 | | | | Abstract: | Temple Emanu El is a suburban Cleveland, Ohio, Reform synagogue founded in 1947, the third Reform congregation established in Cleveland. Recognizing that half of Cleveland's Jews were unaffiliated following World War II, the Union of American Hebrew Congregations asked Cleveland native Rabbi Alan S. Green to form a congregation specifically to attract the unaffiliated. Creating an atmosphere of participation in religious services, Emanu El had a membership of 500 families by the end of its second year. Rabbi Green oversaw the growth of the congregation to approximately 650 families. He was succeeded in 1977 by Rabbi Daniel A. Roberts. Jack arrived after his mother died during the flu epidemic and Sarah arrived from Omaha, Nebraska, when it was discovered her mother was dying. The couple married in 1933 and had two children: Richard and Judy. Later in life, the Formans were active members of the Jewish Orphan Home Alumni Association with Jack serving as the president for several years. Moritz Joseph arrived in the United States in 1853 from Gauersheim, Rheinpfalz, Germany, during the nineteenth-century German-Jewish immigration period. Settling in Cleveland in 1872, Joseph became successful in the manufacturing ofmen's clothing incorporating that operation as the Joseph and Feiss Company in 1907. The company, formed out of previously operating businesses, was one of the largest manufacturers of men's clothing in the United States. Moritz Joseph married Jette Selig in 1853; the marriage produced four sons. Three of them, Isaac, Fred, and Siegmund, and Siegmund's son Ralph, worked all or part of their careers with the Joseph and Feiss Company. The foruth son, Emil, Emil's son Frank E., and Frank E.'s son William R., became lawyers after graduating from Columbia University Law School. Frank E. Joseph was a promient lawyer and a partner at the Jones, Day, Cockley, & Reavis law firm. The family has been very active in both leadership and philanthropy in Cleveland in institutions such as the Musical Arts Associaton (The Cleveland Orchestra), the Kulas Foundation, and the Warner and Swasey Foundation, and in Jewish communal institutions such as Bellefaire and The Jewish Family Service Association. The collection consists of scrapbooks chronicling the lives of Martha J. Joseph Joseph, Adele Joseph Yelson and Edmil, Frank E. and William R. Joseph. Included in the scrapbooks are correspondence, photographs, programs, and newspaper clippings. The Joseph Family Papers also include the diaries of Emil Joseph from 1877 to 1938 and Ralph S.
